Molded gaskets and seals are essential protective components in modern industry. They are widely used in pipe connections, mechanical assembly, and fluid system sealing, ensuring reliable operation in high-pressure, high-temperature, or corrosive environments. Their core function is to prevent gas and liquid leakage or the intrusion of external contaminants through physical or chemical barriers.
Molded gaskets are typically made of rubber, fiber, metal, or composite materials, formed through a compression molding process, resulting in precise dimensional stability and structural consistency. Compared to traditional cut gaskets, molded gaskets offer smoother edges and a more precise sealing surface, making them suitable for static sealing applications such as flanges, valves, and pump bodies. For example, fluororubber (FKM) molded gaskets are resistant to high temperatures and chemical corrosion and are commonly used in chemical equipment, while graphite composite gaskets excel in high-pressure steam systems.
Seals encompass a wider range of dynamic and static applications, including O-rings, oil seals, and mechanical seals. O-rings, one of the most basic seals, rely on elastic deformation to fill gaps and are widely used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Polyurethane or nitrile rubber are suitable for low- to medium-pressure environments, while perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) can withstand extreme chemical media.
The performance of both types of components is highly dependent on material selection and manufacturing precision. Modern industry is trending toward the use of high-performance polymers and composites, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and its filled and modified materials, to balance corrosion resistance, compression resilience, and wear resistance. Furthermore, advances in digital molding technology and surface treatment processes have further improved the reliability of sealing systems.
Proper selection and installation are crucial to sealing effectiveness. Engineers must match materials based on operating parameters (such as pressure, temperature, and media) and ensure that installation is scratch-free and free of distortion. Optimized design of molded gaskets and seals not only extends equipment life but also reduces maintenance costs, playing a crucial role in ensuring industrial safety and efficiency.
